' ...material pictures seem almost anachronistic in today's highly sophisticated and digitized world.

we live in a commercially oriented time, flooded of optical attractions. that raises the question, which meaning can a picture still take in view of the technical and digital fabrication of pictures. what do materials mean to us which have no functioning sections of our everyday life, or any high commercial value to possess.

aren't these materials not nevertheless so deeply rooted in our culture that they become even the carrier of our longing? which predicates can be sought out behind the terms of use, image and aesthetics?

the ' original book ' of christian blau gives an overview of the past work phase of the material artist. at the same time it tries to uncover the cultural roots of the materials lead, ash and sand, which blau uses in his pictures.
the author iris simone engelke roams across 5,000 years and the most diverse areas of cultural history, in order to let in stories loosely lined up, to illuminate the different meanings of these materials. literary fragments complete the book of pictures into a reader, which would like to underline another point of view of art.
